Practice questions for the police sergeants’ and inspectors’ legal exams, each answered in the law’s own words. Now on Google Play, with the iPhone version to follow.

Up the Ranks is out on Android. It is revision for the NPPF Step Two legal exam, the 150-question, closed-book paper for promotion to sergeant or inspector, with 1,146 questions covering every chapter of the 2027 syllabus: Crime, Evidence and Procedure, and General Police Duties.
Every question is written independently from the law itself, checked word for word against the text it quotes. Answer one and it shows you which option was right, why each of the other three is wrong, and the passage of law it turns on, exactly as it is written, with its citation and a link to the official source.
The sources are primary law: Acts of Parliament on legislation.gov.uk, the PACE Codes of Practice, CPS charging guidance and Sentencing Council guidelines.
Choose the sergeants’ or the inspectors’ paper. Practise against the clock at 72 seconds a question, the pace of the published format, from 5 questions up to a full 150. Or take one chapter at a time, untimed. It works out your weakest chapters from your own answers, keeps your last 50 sessions, and lets you retry the questions you got wrong.
Download it free and try 25 questions from across all three volumes, with every explanation and every source passage in full. One purchase unlocks the whole 2027 edition, for both papers and every 2027 sitting. There is no subscription, no account and no adverts, and it works offline.
It needs Android 8.0 or later and is on Google Play in the UK. The questions test the law of England and Wales, as the exam does. The iPhone version is on its way to the App Store.
Up the Ranks is independent and unofficial. It does not represent any government body, and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the College of Policing, Oxford University Press or any police force.
